Anode Rods in Tucson: Inspection, Cost & Which Type

The anode rod is the cheapest insurance your water heater has, and Tucson's hard water eats it faster than almost anywhere else. Here's when to check it, what replacement costs, and whether a powered rod is worth the upgrade.

Inside every tank water heater sits a long metal rod called the anode. Its job is simple: corrode so your tank doesn't. In Tucson, where hardness runs 200-350 ppm and TDS often pushes past 550, that rod gets eaten alive. Most homeowners never know it exists until the tank starts leaking and replacement is the only option left. What an Anode Rod Actually Does

The anode rod is made of magnesium, aluminum, or zinc — metals more reactive than the steel tank. Through sacrificial corrosion, the rod attracts the minerals and electrochemical activity that would otherwise attack the tank walls. As long as the rod is intact, the tank is protected. Once it's consumed, corrosion shifts to the steel itself, and the tank starts rusting from the inside out.

What a Failed Rod Looks Like

If more than 6 inches of core wire is exposed, or the rod is under half an inch thick anywhere, replace it immediately — once the tank walls become the sacrificial surface, that corrosion cannot be reversed.

Standard vs. Powered Anode Rods

A standard sacrificial rod (magnesium or aluminum) is cheap but consumes itself — 2-4 years is typical in Tucson.
