Why Your Tucson Bathtub Won't Drain (And How to Fix It)

You step out of the shower and the water is still pooled around your ankles. Or you fill the tub for your kid and notice it's draining at half the speed it used to. In Tucson, a slow or stopped bathtub drain almost always comes down to one of three things — and the fix depends on which one you're dealing with.

What's Actually Clogging Your Tucson Bathtub

Fixes That Actually Work

Start by removing the stopper. On most Tucson tubs it's either a lift-and-turn (unscrew it), a toe-touch (pop it off), or a trip-lever style (unscrew the overflow plate and pull the linkage out). You'll be shocked at the hair clump that comes out attached to it. Next, use a plastic drain snake (the cheap barbed strips work great) and pull out anything within reach of the drain opening. Skip the chemical drain cleaners — they sit on top of the clog, eat through your pipe seals, and in older Tucson homes with cast iron or galvanized drain lines, they accelerate corrosion.

When DIY Won't Cut It

How to Keep It From Happening Again

• →Once a month, pour a kettle of hot water followed by a cup of baking soda and a cup of white vinegar down the drain, then flush with hot water after 15 minutes
• →Consider a water softener if you don't have one — Tucson's hardness is hard on more than just your water heater
• →If your home is on a slab and over 30 years old, ask a plumber to camera-inspect your drain line every few years to catch scale buildup before it stops you up completely

Tucson-Specific Drain Issues to Watch For

Older Tucson homes built before the late 1970s often still have galvanized drain piping or cast iron branches. Both corrode from the inside out, and the rough interior surface holds onto mineral scale and soap residue like Velcro. If you're in a Sam Hughes, Armory Park, or older central Tucson home and your tub drains are chronically slow, you may be looking at deteriorating pipe rather than a clog you can clear.
