What Happens When a Water Heater Falls

When a gas water heater tips, the results are ugly. The gas line rips loose, creating an immediate leak hazard. Flexible water and gas connectors should have enough slack to absorb minor movement without tearing. The whole job takes under an hour for a plumber who does it regularly.

When to Address This

If you're replacing a water heater, strapping should be part of the install — full stop. If you have an older tank that was never properly secured, it's worth adding straps now. The cost is minor compared to the flood damage a tipped tank causes. This is also a good time to check the drain pan, expansion tank, and shutoff valve — the whole install should meet current Tucson standards, not just the parts you can see.
