Water Heater Leaking at the Top Fittings in Tucson?

Fitting Leak vs. Tank Leak: How to Tell

Dry everything on top of the heater with a towel, then watch for 15 to 20 minutes with the water on. If moisture returns only around a specific threaded joint, you have a fitting leak. If water appears to weep out of the top of the tank itself around the nipple base and continues even after the fittings are tightened, the tank has likely corroded through internally and is venting up through the nipple threads. That is a replacement, not a repair.

Tightening a leaking fitting seems simple until you crack the nipple, strip the tank threads, or snap a brittle 15-year-old copper stub-out. On a gas heater, disturbing the flue or the T&P line has real safety consequences. If the fitting is heavily corroded, the correct fix is to shut off the water and gas or power, drain the tank down below the leak point, cut out the bad section, and rebuild the connection with new dielectric unions or brass nipples and fresh flex lines. That is a job for someone who does it every week.
