Water Line Materials in Tucson: Copper, PEX, or CPVC?

Tucson water runs hard (200 to 350 ppm), TDS sits above 550, attic temperatures crush 150 degrees in July, and most homes sit on slab foundations that make future access painful. The wrong material can shave 10 to 20 years off your plumbing lifespan.

Copper (Type L and Type M)
Copper has been the Tucson standard for decades, and most homes built between 1970 and 2005 have copper supply lines. It handles heat well, resists UV damage, and doesn't off-gas. The problem in Tucson is pinhole leaks. Our aggressive water chemistry, combined with occasional high velocity flow and electrical grounding issues, causes copper to develop pinhole failures — especially Type M, which has thinner walls. Type L copper holds up significantly better but costs more.
If you're sticking with copper for a slab repipe, Type L is the only version worth installing here. Anything thinner is asking for a callback in 15 years.
PEX (Cross-Linked Polyethylene)
PEX has taken over new construction in Tucson for good reason. It doesn't corrode, hard water minerals don't stick to the interior the same way they do in copper, and it flexes enough to survive slight slab movement. It's also cheaper and faster to install, which matters on repipes routed through attics and walls.
The catch: PEX degrades under UV exposure, so any run outside or in a sun-exposed attic bay needs to be shielded. It also can't be installed within 18 inches of a water heater's hot outlet — you need a copper stub-out first. In Tucson attics that hit 150+ degrees, use PEX-A or PEX-B rated for the temperature range, not the cheap stuff from big box discount bins.
CPVC
CPVC shows up in a lot of 1980s and 1990s Tucson homes. It's cheap, handles hot water, and resists corrosion. But it gets brittle with age and heat exposure. After 25 to 30 years in a Tucson attic, CPVC fittings crack when you look at them wrong. We regularly get calls from homeowners whose CPVC failed at a joint they never touched.
We don't recommend CPVC for new installs in Tucson. If your home has it and it's still working, leave it alone until it forces the issue — but plan for a repipe within the next decade.

What About Fittings?
The material of your pipe means nothing if the fittings are wrong. Brass fittings with high zinc content (yellow brass) fail from dezincification in Tucson water — we see this constantly on cheap PEX crimp fittings. Use low-lead, dezincification-resistant (DZR) brass or engineered polymer fittings rated for your water chemistry. Expansion-style PEX-A fittings are the most reliable long term.
When to Repipe vs. Spot Repair
One pinhole leak in copper is a warning, not necessarily a repipe trigger. Two or three leaks within a couple of years across different areas of the home means the entire system is failing chemically and spot repairs will keep chasing you. CPVC hitting the 25-year mark with any joint failures is a full repipe conversation. PEX rarely needs replacement unless it was installed wrong or exposed to sunlight.
