Which Salt Should You Use in Your Tucson Water Softener?

Tucson water runs 200 to 350 ppm hard, which means your softener burns through salt fast. The type you buy affects performance, resin life, and how often you're dragging bags from the hardware store. Here's what actually works.

If you own a water softener in Tucson, you already know the routine: haul bags of salt from the store, dump them in the brine tank, repeat. What most homeowners don't realize is that the salt you choose has a real impact on how well your softener works, how long the resin lasts, and how much salt you actually go through in a year. Why Salt Type Matters More in Tucson

When Potassium Chloride Makes Sense

If someone in your household is on a strict low-sodium diet, or if you're discharging softener backwash to a landscape area where sodium buildup would damage desert plants, potassium chloride is worth considering. Just know two things: your softener needs to be programmed for potassium (efficiency drops about 10%), and you'll pay significantly more per bag. Most Tucson homes don't need it, but for the households that do, it's a valid option.

Salt Bridges and Mushing: A Tucson Problem

Our dry desert air is great for a lot of things, but it also causes salt bridges — hard crusts that form in the brine tank and trick your softener into thinking it has salt when the tank is actually empty underneath. How Much Salt Should a Tucson Home Go Through?

A family of four in Tucson typically uses 40 to 80 pounds of salt per month, depending on water use and softener sizing.
