Electric Water Heater Element Failure in Tucson Homes

Zero or infinite means the element is dead. Also touch one probe to the element terminal and one to the tank body — any continuity means the element is shorted to ground and needs immediate replacement.

Replacing an element sounds simple, but there are steps homeowners regularly skip that turn a $30 part into a $1,200 flood. You have to shut off water supply, drain the tank fully, break the element loose with a proper 1-1/2 inch element wrench (not pliers), inspect the gasket surface, and torque the new element to spec. Skip the drain step and you'll dump 40+ gallons across your garage or utility closet the second you loosen the element.

When Replacement Doesn't Make Sense

  • Tank is 10+ years old — you're throwing good money at a failing tank
  • Anode rod is fully depleted and the tank shows rust at the fittings
  • Both elements have failed within a year of each other
  • Tank has visible corrosion, weeping, or rust-stained water
  • You've already replaced elements once and they burned out again quickly

Preventing the Next Failure
